History

Lonesome Highway was formed in 1996 when four former high school classmates reunited to establish a serious bluegrass band to perform throughout the region.  Original members John Arnold III (banjo), Jimmy Kountz (mandolin), Tim Southerly (guitar) and Jody Southerly (bass) played together at various festivals and events until 2003.  The band became very popular throughout the tri-state region.  The group took first place honors at numerous band competitions in VA, MD and WV and made an impressive 5^th place finish during their first appearance at the SPBGMA International Band competition in 2002.   They have had the honor of playing with great professional musicians such as IIIrd Tyme Out, Lonesome River Band, Kathy Mattea, The Lewis Family, Mac Wiseman and many others.

            In February of 2003, Tim left the band to pursue other interest and was replaced by Mark Gibson, of Capon Bridge , WV , for the remainder of the year.  Tom Suddath, another young musician in the county, joined the band on guitar and sharing the lead vocals with Jimmy the beginning of 2004.

            Lonesome Highway prides itself on being able to combine local Hampshire County (WV) musicians to form a top regional bluegrass band.  They released their first album “Look Back on Love” in 1999 and recorded their second album in the summer of 2004, “Chalk Up Another One”.  Both albums showcase the group’s superb vocal abilities, tight harmonies, their instrumental talent and dynamic bluegrass drive.
