BLUEGRASS UNLIMITED REVIEW (Chalk Up Another One CD)                 cd cover picture

Obviously, as the testimonials and acknowledgements indicate and as a single listen confirms, the Romney, WV band, Lonesome Highway, has spent a good bit of time woodshedding with the sound of the Lonesome River Band.  Of course, it helps if you have the talent to make use of the study and that Lonesome Highway has.

The result is one of the better non-label CDs I've reviewed in several years........strong guitar rhythm and punctuations from Tom Suddath, driving bass lines from Jody Southerly, precise and even-mannered lead work from banjoist John Arnold III and mandolinist Jimmy Kountz and, most especially, soaring vocals from Kountz and even more soaring vocals from Suddath.

About half of the album delivers the standards: "This is the Girl I Love", "Chalk Up Another One", "Rocky Road Blues", "Blue Night", and "Old Rugged Cross".  All are given good readings, and I found the slower version of "Sugar Coated Love" a great improvement, removing the corn and lifting the song into the realm of seriousness.

This is a fine debut album full of emotion and intensity and control.....

I have known this band for three years.  They are a great bunch of musicians as well as a fine group of people who I am honored to call friends.  Their roots run as deep as their heartstrings to carry on good traditional bluegrass music.  You have not heard the last of Lonesome Highway.

I have the pleasure of knowing the guys in Lonesome Highway both personally and professionally.  They represent what bluegrass is all about, great talent, showmanship, and a passion for the music and a strong legion of fans.  I book them as often as I can.

In the tradition of Lonesome River Band, Lonesome Highway is a strong regional band with great pickin' and awesome singing.  Being in the radio business, I've seen lots of bluegrass bands over the years and Lonesome Highway impresses me every time I see one of their shows.  So if you like good hard drivin' bluegrass, you're gonna love Lonesome Highway.
